      How it works

      Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic and antihypertensive drug. The reduction in the blood pressure is partly due to the diuretic effect, but probably also that some of the blood vessels (arterioles) are widened and hereby the resistance in the blood vessels are lowered.

      Side Effects

      Disturbances in the electrolyte and fluid imbalance, especially reduced potassium, sodium, magnesium and chloride levels and raised calcium levels in the blood (hypokalaemia, hyponatraemia, hypochloraemia and hypercalcaemia) - raised blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia) and increased excretion of sugar in the urine (glucosuria) - raised uric acid levels (hyperuricaemia), which may lead to attacks of gout in predisposed patients - increase in blood lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides) , reduction in blood platelets (thrombocytopenia, sometimes with purpura) - feeling of increased heart rate (palpitations) - loss of appetite - gastrointestinal complaints (e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, pains and cramps in the abdominal cavity) - temporary increase in urinary excreted substances (creatinine, urea).

      Drug Interactions

      Lithium ,furosemide , laxatives (e.g. castor oil), corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone), ACTH (a hormone), amphotericin, carbenoxolone , penicillin G sodium , salicylic acid and derivatives , digoxin , quinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone, sotalol , thioridazine, chlorpromazine, levomepromazine , sparfloxacine, pentamidine terfenadine captopril, enalapril and betablockers, nitrates, barbiturates, phenothiazines, tricyclic antidepressives, insulins or oral agents such as metformin Amantadine , Atropine , biperiden - Cholestyramine and colestipol, Vitamin D and/or calcium supplements , corticosteroids, carbamazepine , cyclosporine .

      Indication

      It is used to treat : High blood pressure ; fluid retention in the body (oedema).

      When not to Use

      Do not take Hydrochlorothiazide : If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to hydrochlorothiazide, other thiazides or sulfonamides or any of the other ingredients of this medicine ; If you have severely reduced kidney function ; If you have severely reduced liver function ; If you have or have had gout.

      Diuza Tablets Precautions

      Precaution

      If you have had skin cancer or if you develop an unexpected skin lesion during the treatment. Treatment with hydrochlorothiazide, particularly long term use with high doses, may increase the risk of some types of skin and lip cancer (non-melanoma skin cancer). Protect your skin from sun exposure and UV rays while using Hydrochlorothiazide .

      Diuza Tablets Warnings

      Warning 1

      If you experience a decrease in vision or eye pain. These could be symptoms of fluid accumulation in the vascular layer of the eye (choroidal effusion) or an increase of pressure in your eye and can happen within hours to weeks of taking Hydrochlorothiazide . This can lead to permanent vision loss, if not treated. If you earlier have had a penicillin or sulfonamide allergy, you can be at higher risk of developing this.

      Warning 2

      In cases of kidney insufficiency (glomerular filtrate below 30 ml/min and/or serum creatinine above 1.8 mg/100 ml) Hydrochlorothiazide Apotex is ineffective. As the function of the kidneys is further reduced, it may even be harmful.

      Warning 3

      If you are treated for hypercholesterolemia (elevated cholesterol content), Hydrochlorothiazide should not be used as medicine of first choice .
