Hba1c(Glycosylated Hb) Description

Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1C) Test

The form of hemoglobin that is attached chemically to the sugar is called glycated or glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C). This test measures glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), which indicates average blood glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. Hemoglobin bonds with sugars (glucose, galactose, fructose) in the bloodstream, forming glycated or glycosylated hemoglobin.

Interpretation:

  • Normal HbA1C: < 5.7%
  • Prediabetes HbA1C: 5.7% - 6.4%
  • Diabetes HbA1C: ? 6.5%

ADA recommends keeping HbA1C levels below 7% for diabetes management.

Why Get Tested:

  • Assess diabetes risk
  • Diagnose diabetes and prediabetes
  • Monitor and guide diabetes treatment decisions

Symptoms warranting testing include increased thirst, urination, fatigue, blurred vision, high blood pressure, overweight, history of heart disease, and physical inactivity.

How it works?

A doctor collects a blood sample from your arm, which is then sent to a lab for HbA1C analysis.

FAQs:

  • Normal Range: For non-diabetic individuals, HbA1C levels should be 4%-5.6%.
  • Purpose: Detects diabetes and prediabetes in adults.
  • High HbA1C: Indicates elevated blood sugar, increasing diabetes complications risk.
  • Lowering HbA1C: Manage with regular eating intervals, portion control, medication, exercise, and spreading carb-rich foods throughout the day.
  • Diet tips which can be helpful include eating regularly (every 3-5 hours) eating similar sized portions at meals; keeping check of food, medication & exercise; and spreading out carbohydrate-rich-food throughout the day. Banana can be good to eat during diabetes, they are rich in fiber & have low glycemic index (GI). Therefore, they are an appropriate choice for diabetics.
