How it works

Artemether is active against all Plasmodia including those which may be resistant to other antimalarials. Artemether has very rapid schizontocidal activity. The schizontocidal activity of artemether is mainly due to destruction of the asexual erythrocytic forms of P.falciparum and P.vivax . There is inhibition of protein synthesis during growth of trophozoites. There is no cross resistance with chloroquine. It is not hypnozoiticidal but it reduces gamestocyte carriage. There is no rationale at present for using artemether for chemoprophylaxis.

Side Effects

Nausea , abdominal pain , diarrhoea , oral therapy only , dizziness , injection site pain , skin reactions and fever , hypotension , tinnitus , dark urine , sweating , somnolence and jaundice .

Drug Interactions

Antioxidant drugs e.g. vitamin E,C . Additive effect seen with chloroquine. Antagonistic effect seen with pyrimethamine and sulphonamides.

Indication

It is an anti-malarial drug. It is indicated for the treatment of all kinds of malarias , including the chloroquine-resistant malaria and the first aid of fatal malarias.

When not to Use

Hypersensitive to any of the ingredients in the list.

Mether Injection Precautions

Precaution

Artemether should be used for the treatment of severe falciparum malaria only where there is evidence that the antimalarial efficacy of quinine is declining.

Mether Injection Warnings

Warning 1

For children, since the injected volumes will be small, it is advisable to use a 1-ml syringe to ensure that the correct dose is given.

Warning 2

Due to limited data on safety and efficacy, Artemether should not be given concurrently with any other anti-malarial agent unless there is no other treatment option.

Warning 3

Caution is advised when administering Artemether to patients with severe renal, hepatic or cardiac problems. In such cases, monitoring of the ECG is recommended and steps should be taken to correct any electrolyte disturbances.
