Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin indicated for the use in the treatment of Rickets, osteomalacia and osteoprosis.

Side Effects

Common side effects associated with using vitamin D include: Arrhythmias , Confusion , Constipation , Dry mouth , Headache , High levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia) , Lethargy , Metallic taste in the mouth , Muscle or bone pain , Nausea , Sluggishness , Vomiting .


Monitor calciuria and serum calcium. Incase of the high intake of calcium, a regular check of calciuria is essential.


To avoid overdose, take into account the total doses of vitamin D when combining several treatments containing this vitamin.


Monitor calciuria and serum calcium and stop vitamin D intake if serum calcium exceeds 105 mg/ml (2.62 mmol/l) or calciuria exceeds 4 mg/kg/day in adults or 4-6 mg/kg/day in children. In case of the high intake of calcium, a regular check of the calciuria is essential.


It should be administered only with caution to patients suffering from sarcoidosis since the risk of transformation of vitamin D into its active metabolites is increased.

Drugs to avoid

Aluminium hydroxide/Sucralfate: Vitamin D analogs may increase the serum concentration of both. Multivitamins/Minerals/Fluoride/Vitamin D Analogs (ADEK, Folate, Iron): May enhance the adverse or toxic effect of vitamin D analogs. Bile Acid Sequestrants/Mineral Oil/Orlistat: May decrease vitamin D concentration.
